What a fantastic system our body is – a supercomputer directly under our hat, an infamous organ-muscles-bones network with 100 billion nerve cells interconnecting everything with everything.
And what if this system gets out of balance? Then us chiropractors are here for you.
Chiropractic care is a holistic treatment approach that focuses on spinal health and the functionality of the nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Dysfunction in this system can occur, for example, due to joint fixations. Acute pain, recurring tension, nerve pain, and many other symptoms can be indications of such dysfunctions. Chiropractors are specialists in diagnosing these symptoms, identifying their causes, and providing appropriate treatment.
Movement restrictions or fixations of the spine are called vertebral subluxations in chiropractic. You may have heard people in the past talk about vertebrae that are “out” and were “put back in place” by a therapist. However, this shouldn’t be taken literally, as vertebrae do not simply pop out, and if they did, it would be a medical emergency. What is true, though, is that spinal joints have a certain range of motion. When this range of motion is reduced, it limits the functionality of the spine and the nervous system, and we refer to it as a vertebral fixation or subluxation.
The root cause of vertebral fixations/subluxations is of a very diverse nature and does not solely have a mechanical origin, as it is often assumed. Chiropractic recognizes the following as causes for these fixations:
e.g. incorrect posture and movement patterns, acute traumas, lack of movement.
such as medication, smoking, food intolerances.
e.g. stress, depression, anxiety.
The consequences of vertebral subluxations are as diverse as their causes.
Limited mobility affects the overall body biomechanics and statics. It can lead to joint overloads, improper muscle control, and consequently, injuries and pain.
Our brain relies on receiving accurate messages from our body to form an understanding of its current state. Based on the image the brain creates from the incoming nerve signals, it can send appropriate signals back to the body. If these signals are unclear or incorrect, the brain develops a distorted image of the body that no longer corresponds to reality. The longer these joint fixations persist, the more our body enters a state of compensation and faulty patterns. This can lead to a variety of complaints in the long run.
The goal of chiropractic treatment is to diagnose spinal subluxations and faulty patterns and optimize the communication between the brain and the body, thereby enhancing body functionality and mobility through precise adjustments to the spine. The result? A well-aligned body simply functions much better and experiences fewer complaints.
